What I've Learned About Parrot Training From Zoos

This article is about some of the things I've learned about how parrots are trained for shows at zoos. I attempt to tie back what I've learned from shows to how we can use these tools with our own pet parrots. Lots of photos and videos of parrots at shows and video clips of my interview with a professional trainer.

This is a great article. The videos bring back such wonderful memories of the time I was able to spend with you while in preparation for your seminar here in Phoenix, AZ. I can tell you that using your methods regarding food management have changed the lives of my parrots and me. I see the difference in their training motivation. Not to mention that they are healthier too. Thanks for all you do to help those of us that have pet parrots so that we can achieve a great, rewarding relationship with our companion birds.

I found this site because i was trying to find out why seaworld would give away one of its birds. Last month i adopteda great green macaw from a pet store called our feathered friends in san di ego. His paper work and all the staff say hes 3 years old and came from seaworld. While at a pet store in sd called birdsmart today the owner said that he had heard of more than one person who adopted a seaworld bird. Whats the deal?

Hi Jenny,
I am glad that you have found us, but have you tried calling Sea World, San Diego to ask them about this?

There is a chance that the green macaw in my picture and video in this article is the one you got, or one of its siblings. I mistook it for a military but now learned the difference.

I can think of 3 reasons they'd get rid of it.

1) they only want to use juvenile parrots for their flight shows because they are more easily reliable than adults so when a bird gets a little older, they replace it with a baby.

2) this is a sibling that didnt make the cut for the shows

3) they are getting out of having parrots in shows entirely or just changing their show so they are replacing them with a newer act.
