Don't only look at the original list because it's not really correct, read the whole thread to get the corrections and updates (for example, collard greens are really not good for parrots because they are too high in oxalates) but, in reality, all you need is a very short guideline: anything that is orange or yellow has betacarotene in it and the good thing about it is that you can cook them and they still retain their betacarotene so hard things like sweet potatoes, carrots, calabaza, pumpkin, etc can be made into a puree once they are cooked.

I do not know where she got this list from but, please, read the entire thread and do not go by the original list. It has food items there that are not good for birds: spinach (super rich in iron which is real bad for birds), collard greens, beet greens, mustard greens, turnip greens and PARSLEY (REAL bad for birds and something that should NEVER be given to them!) because of high content of oxalic acid (which inhibits calcium absorption -always a problem with captive birds). And then there is kale which should be given seldom because of high content of sorbitol.

That's a really useful list, thank you. Do you know where it was published? Was it part of a bird keepers journal or something?

I don't know where the member found this list but, please, do not use it without doing further research because there are a number of items there that should not be fed to parrots... things that are too high in oxalic acid, for example, like beet greens, collard greens, mustard greens and, most especially, parsley which should NEVER be fed to any bird. Spinach is another one that should never be fed as it is waaaay too high in iron and bad for birds livers. Now, raw plantain does have a lot of betacarotene but it also has a lot of starch when ripe...

The truth is that betacarotene (which is the precursor of Vit A as the vitamin, in its final form, should never be given to a bird) is not such a difficult thing to provide in abundance for parrots because they all love a lot of stuff that has a lot of it - things like sweet potatoes and butternut squash, for example, which they love, as well as any fruit/veggie that is yellow or orange.

No, I think it was put together by the OP but be careful with it, not everything in there is OK so you need to read the entire thread.
