Chewing of toenails and crooked toenail

Postby Kokomango » Fri Jun 25, 2021 5:11 pm

Hi. I have a sun conure who is about to turn 1. Ever since I got her, her foot has been limp and she struggles to walk and often jumps off. I have noticed in the past two months that she started chewing her toenails off in one of her foot and she currently now only has two toenails left. But a few days ago, one of them twisted and it’s now crooked. She seems fine however and I have asked someone who was knowledgeable with birds and he said that her nail will grow back. Should I be concerned?

Hi, Koko, welcome to the forum. If the nail that is missing is the one on the left on the second photo, I don't think it will grow back because I don't see the 'bed' of the nail at the tip of the toe (there should be a little black thingie). I would not worry too much about the 'crooked nail' because, although the problem is not the nail per se but the toe that is twisted, there is nothing you can do now to fix it (you could ask the vet to splint it straight but I doubt the bird will leave the splint alone long enough for it to be effective).

I would highly recommend you take her to an avian vet to see why her foot is limp - is it a broken bone? a tendon? consequence of a stroke? There has to be a reason for it and you need to find out what the reason is -exactly- as she might be in pain.

Focusing on one particular toe suggests that it's bothering her somehow. Arthritis, maybe? Or some other kind of pain. Recommend an avian vet examine her for sensitivity.
