They are strictly seasonal, super nutritious and the birds LOVE them so grab as many as you can while they last. Some people find it difficult to tell when they are ready so I'll share with you what I do. First you gently squeeze the ones that have the darkest red skin as you are looking for a bit of a 'give' when you do. Then you wait at least 3 days for them to continue ripening and, when they feel a bit softer (they will never be really soft) and the skin is beginning to look a bit dried up (there are like little beige lines running through it), they should be ready. To cut them up and peel them without staining your hands and making a mess of your kitchen, cut them in half and put them in a large bowl with enough water for the halves to be completely submerged, then simply separate the 'inside' from the skin while also getting rid of the 'white' membrane that holds the seeds together - serve the seeds in a large treat cup. This does not eliminate the mess completely but it does reduce it greatly. And do not be scared when you see the almost black poop the next day
