Hi from Maldives

Postby xify28 » Tue Apr 20, 2010 8:07 am

Hi,
i have been looking at this forum from last year. but i never thought about posing anything. but during the last months ive done two postings so ive decided to introduce myself. im 15 years old. im from maldives an island nation in the indian ocean. my family has kept budgies in the family for as long as i remember. but they were never trained. just kept in the cage in pairs to breed. last year i got my mom to buy me a lovebird. hes a peachfaced lovebird. an orange face. his name is lulu. ive taught him turn around, recall, and wings using clicker training.

last week i also got a budgie. but ive been trying to teach it target training with a small stick. but he does nothing when i show him the stick. what should i do.

by the way the budgie is izzy and he is clipped. but im planning on letting the wings grow in. he is not really tame. but he doesnt bite and hes really young so he responses.

there are posts on here about target training they might help you. you have two lovely birds, and i am jealous that you live in the maldives, is it true they are sinking and will eventually disappear. is it hot all year round?. :senegal:

Question: Do you house your lovebird in its own cage?

yes. they are both in separate cages. since izzy is clipped she is out of the cage most of the time.

My new budgie, Biggles, also ignored the stick for a very long time when I started training with him. He would fly to me from anywhere in ther room but still wouldn´t touch the stick with his beak. It´s not that he was scared or anything, he just looked at the stick endlessly not knowing what to do with it - even though he had seen the cockatiels target train right in front of him like a million times.

The way I found for getting round this was to annoy him a little bit by gently cuddling the sides of his head with the stick until he once got fed up and bit the stick to let me know he had had enough. At that moment ---- Click! Treat! and since then he´s been doing fine at targeting...

Maybe this will work for you. Let us know.

And about letting your budgie´s wings grow back, I´m all for it.
