Birds that dislike women/men?

Postby Eurycerus » Thu Jun 28, 2012 11:00 am

I am curious if it is possible to retrain a bird to like/tolerate whichever sex upsets them. Quite a few birds that I have looked at to adopt, indicate that they hate women or men. I automatically dismissed those birds because I am a lady and I have a boyfriend who I am likely to marry. I would hate to have a bird that freaks out around him. Any thoughts/suggestions? Should I continue to dismiss those birds?

Depends how hard your boyfriends willing to work at getting the bird to accept him I would say. I must admit that I have never ever had a bird that doesn't like a particular sex but I have had birds that doesn't like certain people (not quite to the point of freaking out though) and we have managed to get round that with patience and training.

Your partner will have to work with the bird alone though otherwise the bird will just want to be with you and not respond to his training so he must have the knowledge and confidence so get him to read Michaels training blogs. He must also realise it may take many many months and the bird will probably always favour you over him.

Rambo not only disliked men he would attack them. He still prefers women but will now tolerate men.

Although my boyfriend is wonderful, I feel that he wouldn't have the patience and would just get frustrated and sad... Well that's a bummer for those little sexist birds. :/

Other than direct abuse, why would a bird develop such a strong preference for one sex over the other? Because I doubt so many birds (Four out of six of the poicephalus' birds for adoption have a strong aversion to men or women) would have been abused. Maybe not totally cared for properly but not abused! A little pionus I came across also had that problem.

I guess there could be a million reasons other than abuse since non of us can get into a parrots thoughts...

but for hand rears it may depend on the sex of the person rearing them
It could be as they grow older they choose a mate, so they prefer whoever resembles their ''mate'' the closest.
It could be different mannerisms between the sexes which is so subtle we dont notice.
Previous bad experience (not necessarily abuse)
More exposure towards a certain sex like male- female ratios in previous homes.
Lack of socialisation.
The pitch of a voice, maybe some birds have different tolerances to noise like we do.

I guess we will never really know unless theres an obvious reason like an abusive previous home.

Lots of ideas on this one .Ill share my thoughts. When you first get a weaned baby bird, and your the one taking it out everyday, cleaning its cage and feeding it .The bird knows your not going to hurt it.If you want other people to be able to handle it ,it has to be taught[its not a given thing with birds]This has to be done on a regular basis.Lets say you take care of the bird and your husband occasionally wants to see him and the bird freaks out [the bird doesnt know HIM !!] then you hear its a mean bird or it only likes men or women.I think alot of the problem [and there are exceptions]the birds are misunderstood. They have never been taught! Yes if your mean to a bird for whatever reason ,they will remember and can have problems with similiar situations. If you want a interactive bird you have to do the work. :D I think thats the problem with alot of the rehomed birds.

That makes sense to me. I was just talking with my boyfriend and he was surprisingly well versed with some bird techniques. I'm certain I can make anything work with some wonderful bird.

They are all wonderful. Some you just have to look harder.

There are videos of Frostie on YouTube. He loves to dance and has even made commercials around the world. He was turned in to an avian shelter by his owner for being mean and biting. I guess he still bites - but look how wonderful he is to watch. The shelter people love him.

My irn had a small dislike of women, because the vast majority would want to hold her, be scared at the last second and jerk their hand away. I always made sure that any stranger that handled her gave her a treat though because I wanted her to be well socialized. Consequently, when any new person came over she would immediately climb on them and sit patiently for a treat.
