How to train my Cockatiel (Wiki) to let me grab her?

Postby Faraaz » Fri Apr 03, 2015 8:40 am

Hey Everyone,

I have a Cockatiel and her name is wiki. She loves me and when ever I open her cage she comes right out. She steps up and everything and she lets me give her heard rubs/scratches.

But at this point I would like to grab her so I can cut her nails and to put on a harness, especially because the weather is getting nice and I want her to come outside..

She doesn't let me grab her, instead she bites really hard. I don't want to cause her too much stress and ruin our relationship.

So does anyone know how I can get her to let me open her wings and grab her?

Thanks
Faraaz

No grabs. Take her to an Avian groomer.

Get a good quality pedicure type perch for her and this should take care of nail trims for you.
With her on a perch facing you, gently insert finger under the edge of her wing and lift the wing and hold up for count of three. Will probably take several tries before she begins to accept this. Do this for both wings.

The first thing that you must do is the preliminary work such as getting her to accept the wing lifts and then you need to extend this amount of time to about double of the starting count, you must also get her accustomed to having the harness around her, then you must get her to accept the harness being draped on her body. Then you need to teach her to put her head through the head loop and allow it to remain in place and from their Michael has a video for you.

I believe that this is the link that you will need.
You will notice that grabbing the bird is not required to put the harness on the bird. The harness also comes with a dvd with a video to teach you how to put the harness on.

Yes, the video teaches you how to do it but take into consideration that it will take quite a long time to achieve the final goal.
